The implementation standards for ultrasonic testing of stainless steel plates mainly include GB/T 8651-2002 "Ultrasonic Plate Ultrasonic Testing Method for Metal Plates". 

GB/T 8651-2002 is a specialized ultrasonic testing method for metal plates, including stainless steel plates. This standard was released by the China Iron and Steel Industry Association and officially implemented on December 1, 2002, providing detailed technical requirements and operational specifications for ultrasonic testing of stainless 

steel plates. In addition, although the specific standard for stainless steel plates is not directly mentioned, considering that GB/T 8651-2002 is applicable to ultrasonic 

testing of metal plates, all metal plates, including stainless steel plates, should follow this standard for testing operations. ‌


In addition, although other ultrasonic testing standards were mentioned in the search results, such as ultrasonic testing methods for forged steel bars, stainless steel pipes, titanium and titanium alloy processed products, seamless steel pipes, etc., these standards do not directly specify stainless steel plates. Therefore, for ultrasonic testing of 

stainless steel plates, GB/T 8651-2002 is the most directly relevant implementation standard


This standard specifies the ultrasonic inspection methods, comparative test blocks, inspection instruments and equipment, inspection conditions and procedures, defect 

testing and evaluation, quality grading of steel plates, inspection reports, etc. for special purposes such as boilers, pressure vessels, bridges, and buildings.

This standard is applicable to ultrasonic inspection of steel plates (excluding austenitic stainless steel plates) with a thickness of 6-200mm for special purposes such as 

boilers and pressure vessels, bridges, and buildings.

2. General provisions

Personnel engaged in ultrasonic inspection of steel plates must undergo training and obtain ultrasonic inspection personnel qualification certificates issued by various 

national departments. The issuer of the report must hold a Level II or above ultrasonic inspection qualification certificate. The inspection methods can be manual contact 

method, liquid immersion method (including local liquid immersion method and automatic inspection method with piezoelectric probe or electromagnetic ultrasonic 

probe).


The ultrasonic wave modes used can be longitudinal waves, transverse waves, and plate waves. In the first two methods described in section 3.2, direct beam probe 

inspection is the main method, supplemented by oblique probe inspection, and coupling agents such as water and oil can be used.


3. Comparison test block

The materials of the comparative test block and the test plate should be the same or similar to the acoustic performance of the tested steel plate. And ensure that there 

are no defects with a flat bottom hole equivalent to or greater than ф 2mm inside. When using a twin crystal straight probe to inspect steel plates with a thickness not 

exceeding 20mm, the sensitivity test block used is shown in Figure 1, and the performance of the twin crystal straight probe should meet the requirements of Appendix 

A. When using a single straight probe to inspect steel plates, the sensitivity should comply with the specifications in Figure 2 and Table 1.
